RCA RP2800 Personal CD Player Review

I use a portable CD player on a daily basis, primarily to listen to audiobooks (i.e. as MP3 players have almost obsoleted CD's;except there is a very large selection of CD audiobooks available at your local library!).Here are my requirements for portable CD player:
- anti-skip: don't buy one without it, since the player isn't really portable without it;otherwise every little bump creates havoc, sometimes even skipping tracks.Without it, this will even happen in a car with it laying on the front seat!
- LCD display: I need to sometimes note the track# and time, so I can mentally bookmark my location if I get preoccupied with something else during my listening;a bunch of portable players have NO display.
- lock/hold: I need to have mine in my backpack, so it's also annoying to bump one of the controls and have it go into repeat track mode, or stop, or something stupid like that.The 'lock' button will disable the button controls until you unlock it.
- battery life: the trick is to buy AA NiMH 2000mAh+ batteries and charger;I get 10-12 hours listening time.(Alkalines get you half of that, if you're lucky.)
- auto-off on CD end:nothing like finishing a CD, and having to remember to turn it off (to save batteries);this one will go off by itself.

This RCA rp2800 has all the above, so I recommend it;especially since it's at a good price point compared to the alternatives.Plus, it has the following which makes it better:
+ the display is on the edge, which makes it convenient when needing to remeber a track#, when it's inside a bag/backpack.(
+ the volume controls are also on the edge, also convenient when needing to adjust the volume;the lock button is next to these same controls, also handy when having to unlock it to adjust it.

Sony WM-FX467 Digital AM/FM Stereo Cassette Walkman Review

When my 2nd cousin, Charlie, gave me this as a thankgiving present. I thought nothing of it at first because I already have 2 other walkmans. But when I tried it (with the stylish black leather cover included with the package) it was so so great I haven't used the other 2 since. The sound for the radio(if its on the right frequency which this is more likely deliever because it goes by .1s) and cassette is as clear and crisp as like nothing else I ever heard before. The same goes the same for the cassette with its new anti-rolling feature you'll have continuing smooth sound despite movement. More than that it has this new feature that allows you to hear whats on tv (non-cable channels) which allows me to enjoy Jay Leno's jokes at night in bed. Not to mention there is the ability to preset radio and tv channels so you can quickly switch from one radio station to the next without the hassle of flipping stations. Along with megabass for to make this small easily portable radio to practically have surround sound. And suprisinly all these new futures (and a few other minor ones) are so easy to use, Forrest Gump would have figured them out within 15 minutes. However despite all those great qualities it has two very very minor problems. The battery light is not really that accurate because when the light says no batteries, you actually got about an hour left (total battery life, about 14 hours give or take 4) and since the switching of frequencies goes by .1, if your new to radio its gonna take a while to explorer all the frequinces and find whats good. Other than that this a great product for its price (you'll get it back from not changing the 2 AA batteries so often) that is great gift for anyone to have something to listen at home or while traveling.

Sony SRST1 Computer Speakers Review

I bought my first one of these about ten years ago (to give you an idea of how long that is, the instructions show you how to connect it to your Walkman). It's still going strong. I bought a second one because Amazon (actually Wall Street photo) offered me a great deal, and it's worth having a spare.

Out of the box the speakers sound terrible. You need to kick up the bass on your player, and tweak the positioning a bit (the tweeters fold down, so you can face them in the same direction as the bass, or backwards). The system actually sounds best on a bookshelf (to give it some additional resonance), and, depending on the music, it may also be best to fold down the tweeters and let them bounce off the back. It's also optimized for voice range, so folk and swing sound better than heavy metal or disco.

Cosmetically, the speaker isn't pretty (not so much retro as orthopedic). So?

Sony TCM-400DV - Cassette recorder - silver Review

It's really hard to find any cassette player-recorder these days.I've tried several for language tapes.Sony is definitely the clearest sounding portable there is.It's super easy to use; can use the buttons with gloves on.And I like the availability of an AC adapter - a few less batteries into the environment.Suggestions for improvement would be: a larger counter and firmer buttons controlling "REC TIME" and "speed control". I usually have to re-adjust these for listening when I pull the recorder out of my bag.

Sony Portable Sports AM/FM Cassette w/ TV/Weather Band (WMFS421) Review

One long-asserted myth of consumer capitalism is that products improve over time, tested and winnowed by the market. This Walkman disproves that. I had a Sony Walkman that I used every day for over a year (until I dropped it down the side of a mountain); it had auto-reverse, a convenient belt clip, it was compact enough to fit into a pocket; it was everything I wanted in a Walkman. And, of course, it's not being made anymore. Instead, you have stuff like this.
This is a device that's designed for one apparent use: to hold in your hand (a large hand; it's too big for my wife to hold comfortably) (and only in your right hand; it is not laid out to fit comfortably in the left hand) while jogging in the rain. Or, perhaps, trail running or some ther "edge" sport.
It's big and heavy; about twice as large as it needs to be. This means, among other things, that you can't easily fit it into a pocket.
The cassette bay opens a bit like a submarine hatch, which is to say it takes two hands and a lot of attention to get the cassette in and out. So, you'd think they'd put auto-reverse in it to reduce mucking around (and keep the water out) but they don't.
The volume knob is very easy to find and adjust, but if the Walkman is anywhere but in your hand (in a coat pocket, perhaps?) the volume changes every time you move.
There's a belt clip, which is on the short list of things I need on a Walkman, but there's also a fabric strap to hold it onto your hand with, and the strap, which is not removable, gets in the way of the belt clip and makes it really difficult to clip securely.
It is ostensibly water-resistant (though it's not meant to play underwater) and there's a rubber seal in the cassette bay. I use my Walkmen primarily for bicycling to work in rainy Seattle, and I've never had a problem with any of them being damaged by water. I guess I'm not extreme enough. This would be a useful feature for a kayaker, I suppose, except that a kayaker would have a hard time holding it in one hand, as he paddled.
But it looks great: if you have one of those traffic-cone yellow Nissan Xterras, this Walkman would look really cool sitting on the hood.

Sony Network Walkman NW-HD3 - Digital player - HDD 20 GB - WMA, MP3 - black Review

Sure it's big, and everyone mistakes it for a camera. But I personally didn't like the iPod I was given and definitely don't like using iTunes. My previous mp3 player was the Sony Bean, which I loved except for the smaller capacity and the fragile nature of that sliding portion.
If you're looking for an iTunes alternative and don't need your mp3 player to show album art, hold addresses, play videos or look like a futuristic mercury-leafed graham cracker, I would recommend the Sony 20GB NW-HD3. It's not sexy but it holds more than I need (for now) and I find Sonic Stage easier to use than iTunes. And you definitely won't be worried about accidentally crushing it.

I've always liked Coby products, but this one deserves no stars at all.This cd player is very inexpensive, and it only runs on batteries.It does not have an anti-skip feature, and it is extremely light sensitive.In order to have continuous play, it must be shielded from any environmental electrical current, sunlight, lamp, light fixture, flash, beam and ambient lighting.I recently bought three of the players (at that price, I figured I'd have a backup once I dropped it a few times), and I've completely "used up" two players.Each one completely died from less than 2 weeks of use.It seems the abuse of using the player in a lit environment ruins the electronic mechanism!

I agree with ablee@concentric.net that the battery cover is way too insecure -- I'm lucky I haven't lost it. Although the station-lock feature is useful, the unit keeps beeping whenever the locked buttons are jostled.Finally, I wish they'd either include better earphones or leave them outand let us buy our own. On the plus side: convenient, and with good sound(using Koss portaphones!)

Sony SRF-M73 Sports Walkman AM/FM Stereo with Mega Bass Review

This product exemplifies the decline of Sony quality. Unless they redesigned this model since I bought one in December 2000, it is not an armband radio.It only has a strap suitable for hanging on something, or wrapping around your wrist.It does have a belt clip. To release the clip manually, you push on the tab. To release it automatically, you put it on your belt. Unfortunately, the automatic release feature occurs when you least expect it, usually when standing over some hard surface like concrete or a glass table top. The best way I have found to carry the unit usually is to put it in my pocket.Definitely not recommended for sports!The tuning and reception are very poor indeed, with station bleed through, regardless of inside or outside location.Setting the digital to 98.7 yields 103FM usually. That does not happen with any other of my radios at home. There are switches on the back for Mega Bass and FM Sensitivity.These are cheap switches which never fully "click" into place, requiring constant fiddling that results in shorting static.
There are some good features, like the locking feature, which either locks the station setting or power off.This is necessary because the buttons tend to get pushed (especially when in my pocket). The volume control, however, does not lock in, and may turn up or down unexpectedly. Do not buy one of these, and please consider Panasonic or JVC products. All my JVC and Panasonic products are topnotch, while every walkman I ever owned an most recently my Sony video recorder have broken.And I babied them. So no more phony baloney Sony for me!!
