Sony CDCASE5 CD Walkman Carrying Case Review

Sony CDCASE5 CD Walkman Carrying CaseLike the title of this review says, this carrying case does exactly what it was designed to do: carry your Sony CD Walkman.I've got a Sony Atrac3/MP3 CD Walkman D-NE320 - CD / MP3 player (the orange one, not the pink one) and it fits perfectly. It's a little snug, but you can even wedge an extra CD or two behind the player in the case.

The zipper opens the case wide enough that you can get to the HOLD toggle on the back of the player without having to take the it out of the case.Reviews for the previous version of this product (the CDCASE4) talk about how the hole in the face isn't wide enough for the buttons. This IS NOT a problem for this unit - the hole is just the right size.As long as you are smart enough to thread your headphone plug through the hole BEFORE you slide the player into the case, you shouldn't have any problems with this case.

There was some concern about the CDCASE4 not having a strap long enough for wider-waisted people, but I don't think this will be too much of a problem with this one.I have an average-sized waist and I had to tighten it down to about half, so you'd have to be pretty large to have that problem here.

I was out on a run earlier this week when I got caught in a 20-minute downpour.I pulled my (admittedly thin wicking) shirt down over the exposed front of the player, for whatever little that helped. The case, while of course not water-PROOF, is water-RESISTANT enough that my player is perfectly fine today.I'm not telling you to go run in the rain with this case, but it certainly makes me feel more comfortable about getting hit with freakish Florida storms.

But, the reason I gave this case a 3/5 instead of a 4/5 or 5/5 is that it really IS NOT good for jogging or running.Walking, sure. But, the way it is engineered, the strap feeds through the back of the case for only about the width of your thumb. This leads to quite a bit of violent flopping around at high pace, which leads to lots of dead air as the player has to keep re-seeking the CD.(And thus, I presume, shortened battery life.)

I ended up taking the strap off my waist and wrapping it around my bicep a few times before locking it into place. It certainly wasn't designed for it, but it works.(If you have a small enough torso, you might also get away with wearing it baldric-style across your chest.)All of your iPod-toting friends may point and laugh, but it's still better than carrying it.
